http://twitter.com/chrispirillo – http://facebook.com/chrispirillo – http://chris.pirillo.com – I received an email the other day from a community member who has some questions about the differences between the Apple App Store and Google’s Android Marketplace. He feels that the apps are one of the biggest reasons people choose one phone (or operating system) over another, and wants information to make an informed decision himself. http://live.pirillo.com

In this video, I continue my series of Google Android videos and discuss the Android Marketplace. The Android Marketplace is Google’s answer to the iTunes App Store. Within the marketplace, you’ll find many applications both free and paid sorted by category. I had heard many stories about how much the Android Marketplace lacked applications, but I really didn’t find that to be the case. When compared to the iTunes App Store, sure it has much less, but there’s plenty there for the average consumer. The controls are simple to navigate, applications include a summary and reviews, and the pricing structures seem decent. I was unable to experience the purchasing process since the review unit I have does not allow one to purchase apps, but downloading free apps was a breeze. Every download occurs in the background and notifies you (via the wonderful Android notification system) when it’s complete. I’ve downloaded quite a few apps, and I plan to try many more using the Google Android Marketplace. Enjoy!

Google Tech Talk
February 25, 2010

ABSTRACT

Presented by Professor Arno Puder, SF State University.

Smart phones such as Google’s Android and Apple’s iPhone have become popular devices for mobile applications. In particular, both devices allow the development of native applications that can take advantage of special purpose hardware such as accelerometers or GPS. While similar in capabilities, smart phones differ greatly in the way native applications have to be written for them. Google’s Android is based on Java with an Android-specific set of widgets, while Apple’s iPhone only supports Objective-C as the programming language of choice. In fact, Apple explicitly prohibits Java virtual machines on the iPhone per license agreement. Objective-C and Java are two radically different programming languages. While Java features strong typing and garbage collection, Objective-C supports dynamic typing but no garbage collection. In this presentation we will describe a technique how Java-based Android applications can be cross-compiled to native iPhone applications. We will demonstrate how Java can be cross-compiled to Objective-C and how the Android API can be mapped to the iPhone-specific Cocoa API. One specific outcome of our work is that native iPhone applications can also be developed in Java. Several demos will be given throughout the presentation. The source code is available under an Open Source license at http://xmlvm.org.

Arno Puder is an Associate Professor at the San Francisco State University. Prior to his current position, he worked for AT&T Labs Research and Deutsche Telekom AG. His interests include middleware, ubiquitous computing, and applications for sensor networks. He is one of the founders of the Open Source CORBA implementation called MICO.

Your iphone, blackberry or android is more than just a tool. It’s also a great place to play games, prank friends, and just generally have fun. These 7 great phone apps will have you laughing and poking for hours!

Fortune Cookie for the Android
You shake your Android G1 phone. You get a fortune. Fun. Download, why not?

WhatTheFont for the iPhone
Half novelty and half utility, this free app lets the type geeks out there identify fonts around town and on the street. It works by simply taking or loading in a photo, cropping your focus area, then defining letters. WhatTheFont then processes the photo and gives you a list of similar, but not exact matches of fonts. Hopefully, you have decent lighting and a good angle since the app can be a little sensitive… but all in all, it’s a fun, easy to use app that allows you to identify fonts to use later.

Sheep Launcher Free for the iPhone
If the ninety nine cent price for Sheep, Sheep Abduction, Zombies vs. Sheep or Sheep Launcher Plus! is too much to bear… try out Sheep Launcher Free! Kronos games combines a sheep, a WW 1 style flight helmet and your iPhones touch screen into a poke based time waster that distracted me from my undersized seat and total lack of legroom for at least half my last cross country frlight from SFO to EWR before I finally tore myself away. Download!

Yammer for the Blackberry, iPhone, iPod Touch
Yammer is a tool for making companies and organizations more productive through the exchange of short frequent answers to one simple question: What are you working on?

Movie Lingo for the iPhone
This little app resembling a slot machine is free and fun! Shake and get a random movie quote, or browse through hundreds of your favorite movies. Download!

Scramble2 for the iPhone
The game is simple, in your playing space, letters are arranged in a grid as 4 or 5 across and 4 or 5 down. Your goal is to link as many words as possible within a 2 or 3 minute time period. Drag your fingers across letters or press on them sequentially to complete words. The longer the words you get, the more points you get. At the end of each round, you can see a list of every possible word you could have gotten. The total number of possible words is always displayed. If you want to get competitive, and I know you do, not only can you play and pass the same grid to a friend right next to you, but you can challenge friends (or strangers) to play online and see their high scores through integration with Facebook Connect. A definite DOWNLOAD if you are into word games.
